World War I & the Great Migration

The promise of factory work drew thousands of Black southerners to South Bend during and after World War I. But new arrivals encountered a city rapidly hardening its racial boundaries — through restrictive covenants, segregated workplaces, Klan intimidation, and deliberate policies designed to contain Black life to the least desirable corners of the city.
